Description

Creating a City where Everyone Belongs
We've been part of Hamilton for 43 years. We are people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life together in our homes, neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces and community. We strive to create a city where everyone belongs -- inclusive, free from discrimination and barriers, and where the true potential of every life shines. Our mandate is to support and make known the many gifts of those with intellectual disabilities in our community.
Our History
L'Arche is a worldwide organization with 154 communities in 38 countries. Our founding history is rooted in the Catholic tradition -- today we serve and welcome those of all faiths, cultures & backgrounds.
The L’Arche community in Hamilton began in December 1978. The original home was on King Street, and was comprised of three Core Members (persons with disabilities), the community leader and one assistant. Today our community consists of 21 Core Members residing in five homes in the Sherman Hub neighbourhood. Many of our founding Core Members are still in the community, offering their unique gifts and histories to those who join us now.
In each home, Core Members and those who come to assist live together, sharing chores, celebrations and daily life. Weekends and evenings are times for outings, recreation and relaxation. Our community has many friends and volunteers who share their ideas, talents and energies with the community members. They often accompany Core Members to extra-curricular activities like swimming, music, movies or simply joining the house in their regular activities. Transforming relationships are at the heart of our community and many people remain faithful to these friendships over many years.
Outside of the home, the Core Members participate in a variety of  programs, including our Creative Hands Art Studio and the L'Arche Hamilton Inclusion CoffeeHouse. Our Art Studio is open to those with intellectual disabilities who reside throughout the city. The Inclusion CoffeeHouse, which had it's grand opening April 2022 is a new program where those with and without intellectual disabilities can gather together in a safe place to learn about each other, and share their many gifts. Throughout all of our programs, our goal is to create safe spaces where every person is valued for the gifts they bring to our city. We are a place where everyone belongs.Read more
