Description
Join Mackenzie House for a tribute to the life and work of Mary Ann Shadd Cary, the first Black woman to publish a newspaper in North America. In 1854, she was publishing her newspaper, The Provincial Freeman, on King Street in Toronto. Visitors are invited to print a copy of Mary Ann's newspaper on the 1845 press, customized with their name! (Note: the historic house is currently unfurnished, as restoration work continues.) Toronto History Museums celebrates Black History Month with Lifting Voices for Belonging, a series of programs which celebrates the many contributions and the enduring legacy of Black communities on this land now known as Canada.
