Description

Society for the Living is a non for profit organization providing food services to families and individuals in need since 1998. We serve  a diverse group of Ward 7 residents who live in the neighbourhoods of Humbermede, Glenfield-Jane Heights and York University Heights, all of which are neighbourhoods designated as Neighbourhood Improvement Areas in the City of Toronto.  Society For The Living  aims to provide assistance to the living (those in need) as the dead can no longer be helped, therefor it is important for us to come together as a community to support one another while we are alive.  This is the origin of the name, Society for the Living.
We began by handing   out hot lunches to people who are homeless within the GTA.  As the need for food assistance  increased within our community, we partnered with other community agencies such as North York Harvest and Second Harvest food bank, who are both fighting for food justice for all.  Our program is run by 100% volunteers, many of whom are living within the community.
Society for the living strives to provide dignified food assistance to our community. For us, this also means respecting the diverse circumstances that bring clients to our doors. For many of the recently unemployed, seniors, families with children, and people living with disabilities, food banks are a last, yet necessary, resort.
We value community, planting positive seeds and helping individuals and families while there is life.
We are a society for the living.
