Description

The Eleanor Drury Children’s Theatre is a local non-profit theatre group which was formed in 1981-1982. The group exists to provide opportunities for young people to learn and experience live theatre, and to produce a theatrical production for school aged children and their families. The group was established in memory of Eleanor Drury, by members of Cambrian Players, to recognize her long and enthusiastic association with theatre in the community. Eleanor was a well loved and greatly admired teacher and, with her passion for theatre, was a strong advocate for a theatrical venue for children. The first production in December 1982 was entitled Granma’s Stockings, written and directed by Laurent J. Goulet. Today we have actors between the ages of ten and eighteen supported by younger junior actors and produce an annual production for the public and local schools. For many years EDCT was one of the only opportunities for children to perform in theatre in Thunder Bay, and today EDCT continues with the mandate to support children in attending and participating in theatre.  Beyond our annual programming we fundraise to provide low cost school matinees and our "Take a Child to Theatre" initiative provides support for children's community groups allowing them to attending our performances.
The organization is run by volunteers, under the leadership of a volunteer Board of Directors. The production utilizes professionals as directors, producers and stage managers. Other activities supporting the production including costumes, make-up, sets etc. are accomplished through the efforts of the actors, their families and volunteers. We count on donations and proceeds from our performances to sustain the group. This combined with the work of the actors and parent volunteers allows the group to keep our program fees low and accessible to families. EDCT is also a Pro Kids Supporter. Our rehearsals normally start in September and continue to the performances. During In this time we learn the play, develop sets and costumes and the large list of tasks involved in delivering a production. EDCT also provides opportunities for theatre based community programs.  If you would like to join EDCT as an actor/actress or are interested in supporting Children’s Theatre, please contact us at Eleanor Drury Children’s Theatre PO Box 10213, Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6T7 [email protected]
