VRP has the mandate to assist grades 1 and 2 students who are struggling with reading to attain grade level while developing a love of reading.   We have approximately 280 volunteer readers assisting over 400 children in more than 20 Toronto elementary schools most of which are in United Way High Priority neighbourhoods.   Our hope is to expand VRP to all metro schools (and beyond) wherever there is a need.
Our volunteers comprise retirees, parents working at home, university students and community readers  (parents and even parents of the teachers from the schools).  We conduct training workshops so that volunteers feel comfortable with our procedures, the reading setting  and our materials.  All secure Police Reference Checks.
Schools select the children with whom we read.  Each child receives ½ hour 1-to-1 support twice weekly during school hours and practises reading with us in an encouraging, non-threatening environment. Last year, we helped almost 500 children improve their reading skills. Our students receive a certificate and gift of a storybook in June. Teachers,  school administrators and parents have been extremely appreciative of our help. In fact our first school, Gateway PS in Flemingdon Park, is in its 11th year with VRP.
