The Greenbelt Foundation (formerly the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation) is the only organization solely dedicated to ensuring the Greenbelt remains permanent, protected and prosperous. The Foundation is working to help keep farmers successful, strengthen local economies, and protect and enhance natural features.
On February 28, 2005, the Ontario Government established a provincial Greenbelt, adding one million acres of farmland and environmentally sensitive areas to the already protected Niagara Escarpment and Oak Ridges Moraine. Now a world-class model for preservation, Ontario’s Greenbelt is the largest of its kind, spanning almost 2 million acres of protected forest, farmlands, and wetlands.
Shortly after the Greenbelt’s creation, the Foundation was established. The Foundation is a private charity operating independently from the government. We work to promote and sustain the Greenbelt’s interconnected natural, agricultural and economic systems, in order to foster a working thriving Greenbelt for all and to ensure the Greenbelt as a vital, valuable, and permanent safeguard for our future that increases the quality of life for all residents of Ontario.
